News that Saves the World and more Updates!
Get tickets to the ecoRI News 15th Annual Zero-Trash Birthday Bash before you miss it!
I’m almost too late in relaying this info, but there are still some tickets left for this year’s ecoRI News Zero-Trash Birthday Bash. If you’re interested in supporting one of the best independent, non-profit environmental news organizations in the country, plus get beer from Long Live Beerworks, wine from Bottles, sodas & seltzers from Yacht Club Soda and food from Amos House’s More Than a Meal Catering—all included with the ticket price—while also checking out the Dye House in Providence, then buy a ticket now and I’ll see you on Thursday evening.
If you would love to support ecoRI News, but can’t make it to the Birthday Bash, you can do so in two ways. One, we have an online auction with over 40 fantastic local items donated to ecoRI News, so jump on that and bid like crazy! Two, become a sustaining member of ecoRI News. You probably subscribe to a bunch of monthly things that you barely read or view, why not donate monthly to a local non-profit that is trying to help us all save the planet for you and the future? Or if you can’t become a monthly member, maybe you can donate once to help.
Don’t forget you can always find all the best local food and drink events, not only the events I’m part of, at eatdrinkri.com/events.
Moving on, I had the chance to interview Senator Jack Reed this summer about the Expanding Access To (EAT) Local Foods Act. We had a great conversation about this piece of legislation he’s sponsoring that will hopefully make it’s way into the Farm Bill in the next session of Congress, if not sooner.
Thank you to Senator Reed for his time and energy on this important food system issue. If you’re not able to watch this video, it’s also available as an audio-only podcast on just about every platform. Links are on this page on eatdrinkri.com. And if you do prefer video, there are many more local food and drink videos to watch on the Eat Drink RI YouTube Channel. I always appreciate people subscribing to that.
To those of you who last month came to Fishes at the Fort, I thank you. It was a spectacular evening and we raised almost $14,000 for Eating with the Ecosystem. Thank you very much to all the chefs, fisherpeople and volunteers who made the evening work so beautifully. We have another fundraising event with a different group of amazing chefs coming up on Monday, September 30th, along with a screening at the Mystic Aquarium.
Join us on September 30th from 6-9 pm at the Mystic Aquarium in the Main Gallery as we celebrate the launch of “Hope in the Water” – a new PBS series exploring oceanic health and solutions for maintaining a healthy ecosystem in our waters. This three-part docuseries is brought to you by thirteen-time Emmy award-winning producer and writer David E. Kelley. Hosted by The Mystic Aquarium, in partnership with The Shipwright’s Daughter, PBS, Fed by Blue, and Eating with the Ecosystem, this evening will feature a 20 minute viewing of the docuseries, and a live panel discussion with James Beard Award-winning chef David Standridge, Hope in the Water producer, Jennifer Bushman, Kate Masury from Eating with the Ecosystem, and the sustainability experts at the Mystic Aquarium.
Food service will be provided by Chefs David Standridge, Renee Touponce, Adam Young and Johan Jensen with reception to follow.
For those of you familiar with the dining scene in Mystic and Stonington you’ll recognize those chefs’s names as some of the most talented folks in New England. I’ve been to all their spots multiple times (ok, only once at The Port of Call, but we’ll get back there!) and I’m very excited to taste what they all do with local seafood. I hope to see you there.
